A profound shift is underway in global demographics, with one of the most prominent features being the rapid ageing of the population. India is riding this demographic wave too, fuelled by improvements in longevity and plummeting fertility rates, culminating in a growing share of the elderly. This paper examines India’s emerging ageing trajectory and identifies the potential age-crossover tipping points in the latter half of the 21st century. Though India is expected to move from its first demographic dividend to the second demographic dividend, or silver dividend, it is likely to generate substantial economic strains on the state exchequer for healthcare and social security.
