Migration is a defining feature of the modern world, deeply shaping economies, societies, and
cultures. In India, internal migration has long been central to livelihoods and regional development.
As the nation advances toward its vision of “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047,
understanding internal migration is vital for achieving inclusive growth, social equity, and
sustainable development. With rapid urbanization, economic transformation, and changing labour
demands, migration whether rural-to-urban or inter-state significantly influences labour markets,
remittances, skills, and social cohesion. Recognizing these dynamics is essential for formulating
policies that harness migration’s potential for national progress.
This conference brings together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to explore the
multifaceted dimensions of internal migration and its developmental implications. It aims to foster
dialogue on how migration can enhance economic resilience, equity, urbanization and regional
balance while addressing challenges such as climate-induced displacement and socio-economic
vulnerabilities. Encouraging interdisciplinary exchange, the conference highlights empirical
research and policy insights that strengthen understanding of migration’s role in shaping India’s
future. By linking research with policy action, it seeks to promote a migration-inclusive
development agenda aligned with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision recognizing migration not as a
challenge, but as a catalyst for equitable and sustainable national growth.
